What do board members need to know about planetary boundaries and climate risk management?

Climate change is no longer merely an environmental issue, it has become a strategic challenge for businesses and their boards. The growing impacts of climate change, the scarcity of natural resources, and systemic dependence on inefficient models of material and energy use are already affecting costs, supply chains, business models, and the long-term viability of companies. Understanding these challenges and managing them is becoming a key part of responsible corporate governance.

In a webinar organised in cooperation with the Slovenian Directors' Association, we will highlight why transgressing planetary boundaries is also a business issue and how board members can recognise risks in a timely manner and steer their organisations toward long-term resilience, efficiency, and competitiveness.

The event is intended for board members who wish to understand the strategic dimensions of environmental challenges and responsibly guide the development of their organisations in a changing economic context.

10:00 | Dr Janez Potočnik: Climate Change in the Context of Planetary Boundaries

Dr Janez Potočnik, Co-Chair of the UN International Resource Panel, former European Commissioner for the Environment, and Ambassador of Chapter Zero Slovenia, will present the broader framework of climate change in the context of transgressing planetary boundaries. He will address the systemic reasons why we can no longer rely on continuous growth in energy and resource consumption, and explain how both business decision-making and consumer mindsets must evolve to ensure long-term prosperity and stability.

10:30 | Mojca Markizeti: Climate Risk Management in the Context of Slovenian Businesses

Mojca Markizeti, sustainability expert, Founder of Improve X Advisory, and Member of the Chapter Zero Slovenia Working Group, will contextualise these issues in the context of Slovenia. She will explain how systemic challenges are already shaping the business landscape through new regulations, pressure from financial institutions, suppliers, and customers. Drawing on concrete examples from Slovenian companies, she will demonstrate how environmental risks are directly translating into operational and financial risks, and how boards can respond proactively. She will give special attention to medium- and long-term impacts on business, including supply disruptions, regulatory demands, and access to capital in a context where raw materials and energy will become increasingly costly or constrained.
