New €17.5 Billion Initiative to Support SME Energy Efficiency

30 September 2025

The European Investment Bank and the European Commission have announced €17.5 billion in financing to support energy efficiency for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the EU by 2027. The initiative, developed in cooperation with the Solar Impulse Foundation, is expected to mobilise over €65 billion in investments and support more than 350,000 companies across Europe.

The main goal of the initiative is to help SMEs reduce energy costs, strengthen competitiveness, and at the same time lower their carbon footprint. SMEs are a cornerstone of the European economy but invest only half as much in energy efficiency as large companies. The initiative aims to close the investment gap, simplify access to financing, and accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient solutions.
